To prevent possible urban violence and combat drug trafficking, the government has called on three “new generation” Republican Security Companies (CRS), specialized in emergency situations and able to be mobilized very quickly. They will take up residence this week in the south, west and central-east of France.
The CRS 81 will come to lend a hand to the police in the Phocaean city, plagued by violence and drug trafficking. It will be engaged “to restore public order, with particular technicality, in support of our shelling operations and legal operations linked to drug trafficking”, specified the Bouches-du-Rhône police chief, Frédérique Camilleri, Monday during the presentation in Marseille.
The 194 members of this unit, “already CRS or from other bodies and services”, “will be available 24 hours a day” and will be able to intervene throughout the south of France.
The CRS 82, for its part, will be deployed in Saint-Herblain, near Nantes, and the CRS 83 in Chassieu, in the Lyon metropolis. Finally, a CRS 84 should be deployed to Montauban in the spring of 2024. These units will be called upon more to support local forces during urban violence, demonstrations that degenerate or for the security of major events.
As reported by AFP, all are inspired by the CRS 8, an elite unit installed in July 2021 by the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin, approximately a year after violence in Dijon involving members of the Chechen community . Established in Bièvres, in the Paris region, CRS 8 is capable of intervening throughout the country.
