According to the South Korea coach, striker Heung-min Son should continue his international career.
Heung-min Son will “certainly” continue to play for the national team, said Thursday Jürgen Klinsmann, the German coach – himself under threat – of the South Korean football team, after the player suggested that he could end his international career after elimination in the semi-finals of the Asian Nations Cup on Tuesday.
South Korea lost 2-0 to Jordan in the semi-finals in Qatar on Tuesday, failing again in their quest for a title that has eluded them since 1960.
“For a player like him, exceptional and who is our captain and leader, it is even more difficult to have to admit that you did not win the title,” Klinsmann said of Son, 31, who plays for the club English from Tottenham.
He said he had exchanged messages with the player since they left Qatar and that he “has no doubt” that he will continue to play for the South Korean national team. “His next goal with us is the (2026) World Cup in America. He will definitely be with us in the future.”
Klinsmann, also under pressure from supporters and the media after South Korea’s failure to reach the final, his objective, affirmed that he would still be at the head of the selection when it faces Thailand for qualifying for the next World Cup in March.
“Yes, we are disappointed after the match (against Jordan, editor’s note), which is normal. But there are a lot of positive things to take away from this competition,” he said, specifying that he had spoken with the officials of the South Korean federation and that he would analyze the performances of the team with its management.
