At CES 2020 Sony first introduced the VISION-S, its first electric concept car, and at CES 2022 it decided to deepen its entry into this market with some very interesting announcements and a new electric SUV.

The vehicles are already being tested in Europe

Sony’s new vehicle is simply called the VISION-S 02, and is a 7-seater SUV-style vehicle that uses the same platform of the previous prototype that has since gone out for testing on real roads in Europe and for further tests later on. This time too it comes with more than 40 sensors, including CMOS sensors developed by Sony itself alongside 18 cameras and Time Of Flight sensors, another 18 radar sensors and ultrasonic sensors and also 4 lidar sensors. Sony has announced that their vehicle is currently being tested in Europe ahead of the release of an “2+” autonomous driving system on public roads. Among other things, the vehicle should analyze your travel lane alongside the other lanes and recommend that you cross a lane at the right moment, and can also help you find parking autonomously.

Overall, the SUV version of the VISION-S seems to be ultimately an enlarged version of the vehicle we saw in 2020, as it too comes with the same monstrous panoramic multimedia system that features a huge center screen and screens for rear passengers as well. Each of the seats is equipped with a speaker system that supports Sony’s 3D audio format, and those who do not drive will also be able to connect to Sony’s slightly odd streaming service, BRAVIA CORE which has also been adapted for its vehicle.

Sony will also allow you to connect to your PlayStation console that is in the house, and play directly from the vehicle in addition to the option to stream games through the cloud directly on the way. Sony has a lot of hopes in the 5G network as an engine that will allow it not only to provide you with entertainment from the cloud, but also a technical support system and road support. See that they have not tried the network in Israel. Unfortunately, Sony has not revealed the critical data like target price or range you will get from the VISION-S 02 battery.

But Sony was not content with announcing another concept car that you may not see in your life, but took a very significant step with the announcement that in the spring of 2022 it will launch a new subsidiary called Sony Mobility, and “examines” its entry into the commercial electric vehicle market. That is, Sony is not just flexing its muscles in front of Apple, which has not yet unveiled any applause from its electric vehicle project, but is publicly announcing that it really aspires to become a carmaker and is showing for the third year in a row its progress in the field alongside real road tests.

The choice of the name “Mobility” may indicate that Sony will not be satisfied with the car market, but may also turn to the micromobile market with scooters and other inventions, and perhaps also to shared vehicles alongside ancillary services that it will develop and not necessarily for itself. The company did not disclose further details in its relatively brief event, so the occult prevails over the visible in this case.
