The cancellation of The Sentry at Kapalua has fueled concerns about potential adjustments to the tour’s overall schedule. A tournament official acknowledged the possibility that this year’s Sony Open could be the last held in Hawaii, though no definitive decisions have been made.
Hawaii’s Enduring Appeal to Golfers and Viewers
Despite the uncertainty, Hawaii remains a highly desirable destination for both players and television audiences. According to a tournament director, the islands offer a unique appeal, particularly for East Coast viewers. “They’re all prime-time East Coast and so from a television perspective, the PGA Tour and the state of Hawaii realize that a lot of people on the East Coast go to work all day and go home,” the director explained. “Here it is 6 or 7 o’clock at night in New York and they’re either having their nightcap at one of the local bars or they’re at home watching the beauty of Hawaii and watching golf.”
A Star-Studded Field
This year’s Sony Open boasts a strong field, including major champions Jordan Spieth, Colin Morikawa, and Zach Johnson. Their participation underscores Hawaii’s continued ability to attract top talent.
