Three years have passed since the end of the Italian series “Suburra”. In reality as on screen. With “Suburraeterna”, the eight episodes of which are put online on Netflix this Tuesday, November 14, we are plunged back into the corrupt underbelly of Rome, a capital plagued by rivalries between mafia camps, crooked politicians and religious authorities not so Catholic as That. The action takes place in 2011, when the city is in economic and political chaos.

The original series, “Suburra,” lasted three seasons. The hero, Aureliano, sought to establish his domination in Ostia, a coastal district of the capital. In the final part of this fiction, he died during a shooting, leaving behind his companion Nadia, devastated. Three years later, it was she who established herself on this territory and the local drug trafficking, managed in rather good harmony with the other neighboring clans.

Better to have seen “Suburra” before

Certainly, over the course of the eight parts, the plot seems to repeat itself a little, but the success of this sequel lies in the management of the female characters. Nadia and Angelica no longer make up the numbers, as was somewhat the case before. Spadino, who seeks to leave that nickname behind and reaffirm his real first name, Alberto, also becomes an increasingly intriguing figure. In Germany, he can live his homosexuality openly and thinks he has left behind the mafia wars that are consuming his hometown. However, a tragedy will force him to return to Rome. The situation is all the more thorny since Spadino’s ex-wife, Angelica, is now married to Damiano Luciani, the eldest of her siblings.

It is difficult to understand all the issues of “Suburraeterna” if you have not seen “Suburra” before. But for fans, it’s a treat to rediscover the atmosphere and many already known characters. Between promises and betrayals, hopes and disillusions, each clan advances its pawns trying to be one step ahead. And every misstep is inexorably deadly.

The end of this season leaves the door open for extensions, propelling “Suburraeterna” on the same path as the series that preceded it. That’s all the bad we wish him.

Editor’s note:
