Ex-minister of internal affairs, and now the chairman of the Belarusian Society of Hunters and Fishermen Igor Shunevich spoke in favor of regulating the number of bears, he is quoted by BelTA. He noted that there are more than 700 bears in Belarus, and 20 years ago there were only 150 individuals.
“Our task is to get a clear understanding from our scientific community about the optimal number of bears that should be in our territory, which would allow us to start hunting them. Since this optimal number has not been determined today, we say: let’s regulate the number where there are a lot of them, a lot, where it interferes with life,” he added.
Shunevich said that today the conversation is only about regulating the number of bears, and not opening hunting for them, because the species is listed in the Red Book.
“But if there is an excess of it, it is necessary to shoot a certain amount, especially problem animals that come into populated areas, on apiaries, which are already injuring people,” said Shunevich.
