Vedi Naples and then … read. Who would have thought that the year of the pandemic would have brought with it, among the many negative effects, also a positive one: the increased consumption of books, both in the traditional, paper version, and in the digital one (eBook).

In the first six months of 2021 they were sold in the channels trade (that is, in bookstores, online and physical, and in large-scale distribution, excluding schools) 15 million copies of printed books more (+ 44%) compared to 2020. The growth becomes more significant if we consider that compared to the year 2019 (therefore net of the effects of the pandemic) 11 million more copies of books were sold (+ 31%).

But even more surprising is the data concerning Naples in the special ranking of Amazon.it of the Italian cities that have bought more books in the last year per capita. While Milan continues to be the undisputed queen of the ranking, this is in fact its ninth consecutive year in first position, Rome chases it and wins second place and Turin is confirmed in third for the second consecutive year, Naples conquers a very dignified seventh place, first among the southern cities (Palermo the most contiguous but secluded in eleventh position). The Top 10 completed by Bologna in fourth place, Genoa in fifth, Florence in sixth and, behind Naples, Padua eighth, Verona ninth and Trieste tenth.

Who would have thought that in the year of the pandemic the Neapolitans would have disregarded the most banal clichés, which the South does not like to read, and would have instead distinguished themselves as passionate readers of books for children and teenagers, but also of great classics for literature, love stories and thrillers, social science and sociology textbooks, economics and finance, personal development, art, travel and cooking. In the first three places of the ranking of Amazon.it They are Together in the kitchen. Having fun in the kitchen with Benedetta’s homemade recipes written by Benedetta Rossi, the most loved cook on TV, The stories of the mystery by Lyon Gamer, who accompanies children and adults in his world of bizarre characters, impossible challenges and secrets to reveal and – in third place – The system. Power, business politics: secret history of the Italian judiciary, the book interview by Alessandro Sallusti with Luca Palamara, a former member of the CSM.

Returning to the ranking of the cities that read the most, Naples made a big leap forward compared to last year when it entered the Top 10 for the first time, positioning itself in ninth place. It just wasn’t that good in 2018, it was in the rear, in 38th place. When we say the reading virus!
