The failure of the Reserve Bank officials to stand up for the Tamiltai greeting song has caused controversy. Tamil activists say, “If the central government is in conflict with the state government, it shows that the authorities are acting in the same fashion.”
The national flag hoisting ceremony was held at the Reserve Bank office in Chennai on the occasion of the 73rd Republic Day of India.
SMN Sami, Regional Director, Reserve Bank, hoisted the flag at the event. After this a Tamil greeting song was played.
Some of the officers who were there for the song sat without getting up.
“Why don’t you stand up when the Tamils greet you?” As one of the reporters there asked, `There is no need to stand up like that. There is a court order, ‘they said.
They have dispersed after saying, “The government has a mandate that everyone should stand up when Tamiltai greetings are played at government events.”
On the morning of the 27th, party volunteers led by Velmurugan MLA, the leader of the Tamil Nadu Right to Life Party, besieged the Reserve Bank and staged a protest over the issue.
Also, Chennai High Court Advocate Rajesh has lodged an online complaint with the Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office.
Following the controversy, SMN Sami, Regional Director, Reserve Bank of India, met PDR Palanivel Thiagarajan, Minister of Finance, Tamil Nadu and briefed him.
On the occasion of the 73rd Republic Day, the Reserve Bank employees stood up and did not pay their respects to the Tamils.
Nevertheless, opposition to the actions of RBI officials in this matter is growing from many quarters.
“Although they are central government officials, they are bound by the state government’s legislation. This is similar to how state government officials are bound by federal laws. The Government of Tamil Nadu has issued an order regarding Tamiltai greetings. Everyone knows this. Even so, owning one is still beyond the reach of the average person. It is also reprehensible to ask. If the central government clashes with the state government, they follow the same course of conflict. The central government is responsible for such incidents, ”said Kumaradevan, a member of the Dravidar League and a Chennai High Court lawyer.
“A complaint has been lodged with the Commissioner of Police. What legal action can be taken? ” We asked him.
“Violations of state rules can be punished. Insulting state government property, including the flag, is a punishable offense. Although it is a bailable offense, it will be a lesson to others, ”said Kumaradevan.
He went on to say, “Some refer to the Supreme Court’s ruling that there is no need to stand up while the national anthem is being played. The state government has issued an order saying, “Tamils should stand up for greetings.” There is no such order for the national anthem. There are a lot of differences between that and this.
Controversy erupted in many quarters when it was said that `the national anthem should be played in theaters. ‘ The court also said that there was no need to stand up and show national devotion. However, the Tamil Thai Greetings Ordinance states that “everyone except the disabled and pregnant women should stand up.” They are violating it. There is a possibility of departmental action being taken against the officials responsible for this, ”he said.
In this connection, we spoke to BBC Tamil on behalf of Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson Narayanan Tirupati. “There is no alternative to standing up for Tamiltai greetings and giving them due respect. The mother tongue is equivalent to the mother. There should be no hesitation in paying due respect while playing it, ”he says.
“When the case came up in the Madurai branch of the High Court last month, the Tamil Nadu government issued the order after the judge said,` Tamils do not have to stand up for greetings’. It is the duty of the authorities to abide by this ordinance. Whoever did this is wrong. They have to meet this legally or pay due respect by singing that song. This is the position of the BJP, ”he said.
