The Temporada Alta festival in Girona takes place from October 12 to 15 at the Planeta hall ‘Com qui sent ploure’. It is a work of documentary theater directed by David Martínez who seeks to interpellate the viewer about “the ecocide” that the Mar Menor area in Murcia. Martínez points out that the piece wants to be a critical look at society that has “disconnected from nature”. ‘Com qui sent ploure’ aims to make the public reflect on “the carelessness with which the environment is treated” and the difficulties generated by man’s action on the climate. A proposal embodied by the actresses Àngels Bassas, Paula Fossanti and Evelyn Rossie, accompanied by the actors Manel Sans and Adrià Díaz.

“The most difficult thing has been trying not to take sides”, this is probably one of the objectives of ‘Com qui senta plure’. With the background of climate change and society’s “bad relationship” with the environment, this work of David Martinez seeks to interpellate the public, based on the open conflict in the Mar Menor area, in Murcia. On the stage of Sala La Planeta in Girona, the viewer will find four polyphonic voices on the need to apply laws that harm the environment, in favor of the economy.

“We are facing a ecocidi, the result of negligence, of not wanting to take care of the ecosystem and what is happening in the Mar Menor, is also happening everywhere. We’re just trying to make it serve as a mirror,” says director David Martínez.

In fact, this ecocide takes place with four characters who have verbal language and that they end up wanting to stay, each of them for their purpose, a fifth character without a voice that is the Mar Menor. “The idea is impact and challenge the viewer so he’s aware of what’s going on,” says the director.

Martínez has focused on the Mar Menor from three episodes of what he calls “ecocide” of this natural space in Murcia. One was in 2016, the other in 2019 and the third in 2021, when hundreds of dead fish went appear on the shore of this coastal lagoon. A conflict that calls into question the need to protect this space and that involves fishermen with the interests of other actors such as tourism or agriculture.

Temporada Alta proposes a critical look at the “ecocide” of the Mar Menor with the premiere of ‘Com qui sent ploure’

“There is no clear culprit, but we are all present and participating. It is like what they say that they all killed her and she died alone. We are all involved and this is one of the characteristics of the play , which makes you think,” he emphasizes.

This generates a “necessary” debate that leads the viewer to wonder what the formula is and that does not end with the end of the play. And it is that, as is usual in the performances at La Planeta in Temporada Alta, there is a conversation with experts and actors and the public who wants to stay.

A long documentation process

‘Com qui sent ploure’ is a documentary play, and therefore requires prior documentation in order to be able to explain the subject and present it to the viewer. Martínez specifies that they have been two years of interviews where many conclusions were drawn and they had to select what should appear in the work and what not.

The director has remarked that they have searched “especially the visual poetry” in order to be able to explain it without the public being “fazed”. “It has been a challenge”, he concluded. The work can be seen from October 12th until the 15th in the La Planeta room from Girona, with a cost of 18 euros.
