Here are the names of the under 40 competitors chosen by the editorial staff of the monthly Arte, directed by Michele Bonuomo, to participate in the competition, which has 25,000 euros up for grabs for the winning work. The award ceremony will be held on October 9 at the Museo della Permanente in Milan, where all the works will be on display the following day

The editorial staff of the monthly «Arte» of Cairo Editore, directed by Michele Bonuomo, have selected the twenty young artists under 40 who will participate in the 22nd edition of the Cairo Prize, one of the most awaited and authoritative appointments on the national art scene. Alessio Barchitta, Andrea Barzaghi, bn+BRINANOVARA, Andrea Bocca, Giuditta Branconi, Nina Carini, Martina Corà, Michele D’Agostino, Roberto de Pinto, Marco Emmanuele, Luca Grimaldi, Rebecca Moccia, Ismaele Nones, Eric Pasino, Stefano Perrone, Giuliana Rosso, Giorgio Salvato, Lena Shaposhnikova, Alessandro Sicioldr Bianchi, Eltjon Valle are the selected talents competing to win the Cairo Award.

«Twenty young artists who significantly represent that “spirit of the time” that animates the current debate on the visual arts», explains Michele Bonuomo, director of «Arte» and adds: «Two new features characterize the 2023 edition. first is the clear affirmation on their part of the pictorial or plastic discipline, without however taking the form of a nostalgic return to a misunderstood tradition. The idea of tradition, understood as an inalienable memory, has never gone away: an achrome by Manzoni, a cut by Fontana, an erasure by Isgrò or a video by Bill Viola, so to speak, are rightfully part of it. The other novelty this year is the choice of location: the Museo della Permanente. This is a return for us: in some past editions the Cairo Prize had already been hosted in the historic Milanese building designed at the end of the 19th century by Luca Beltrami and rebuilt, after the bombings of 1943, by Pier Giacomo and Achille Castiglioni and Luigi Fratino. Appointment, therefore, from 10 to 15 October, for the exhibition of the twenty works in competition; to find out what a very high quality jury will have declared the winner of the Cairo 2023 Prize. It is a beautiful story of Italian contemporary art that continues ».

The prestigious jury that will be called upon to nominate the winning work, whose author will be awarded the Cairo Prize, is chaired by Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, president of the Turin Foundation of the same name, assisted by highly authoritative experts from the art world; Emilio Isgrò, the artist of the «erasures», one of the most internationally famous Italian names in the world of contemporary art; Luca Massimo Barbero, director of the Institute of Art History-Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice; Mariolina Bassetti, President of Christie’s Italy; Ilaria Bonacossa, director of the National Museum of Digital Art in Milan; Lorenzo Giusti, director of the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery (Gamec) of Bergamo; Gianfranco Maraniello, director of the Modern and Contemporary Museum Center of the Municipality of Milan.

The announcement of the winning work of the 22nd edition of the Cairo Prize will be held on 9 October in the Museo della Permanente in Milan and can be followed in streaming on courier service.it, thanks to the consolidated media partnership with «Corriere della Sera». From 10 to 15 October at the Museo della Permanente there will be an exhibition of 20 works, open free to the public, together with the entire Cairo Prize Collection with all the winning works of previous editions. The winner of the 2023 edition will be awarded a prize of 25 thousand euros and the work will become part of the Cairo Prize Collection.
