Five departments. Two companies from the 202nd paratrooper battalion, one in Nir-Eam (HQ: Lt. Matan Vilnai) and one in Nirim, and a platoon from the Vilnai company was assigned to secure the Lachish/Beit Govrin area. This was all the force the IDF was required to place on the Gaza Strip in a typical year, 1965- 66, between Operation Kadesh and the Six Day War. And there was another army there, designed not for fighting but for embalming – under its auspices, Egypt maintained peace on the border between Gaza and Sinai for a whole decade, the calmest of all on this front: the United Nations Emergency Force, the first of its kind, which awarded its proposer, Canadian Foreign Minister Lester Pearson, the Nobel Peace Prize .
