Jack Teixeira, a member of the US Air Force accused of leaking secret documents from the Pentagon, pleaded guilty before a federal court, after concluding an agreement under which he accepted a prison sentence of about 17 years in exchange for dropping the espionage charges against him.
Jack Teixeira, who appeared in an orange prison uniform, pleaded guilty to six counts of intentionally transmitting information related to the Ministry of Defense, in exchange for, according to the agreement, not facing any of the most serious charges of espionage.
It is expected that he will be sentenced to imprisonment for a period of up to 16 years and 8 months and pay a fine of $50,000, in addition to providing assistance to intelligence officials to assess the extent of the impact of what he leaked.
Teixeira was arrested in Massachusetts in April on charges of committing the most damaging leak of secret US documents in a decade, some of which related to the war in Ukraine.
If he did not reach an agreement with the prosecution, Teixeira would face life imprisonment under the Espionage Act.
