Kommersant FM columnist Alexander Levi talks about the company’s plans to create so-called general models of the world using artificial intelligence.
The American company Runway AI, which creates artificial intelligence tools and services for creators, has announced its intention to develop so-called general models of the world, General World Models.
We are talking about a system that builds an internal representation of the environment and uses the data obtained to model future events within this very environment. For a more detailed understanding, imagine, for example, an image of any landscape. The expected technology will allow first-person movement through this picture, as if the observer were in three-dimensional space and moving there at will, and not according to a script or within given restrictions.
To simplify even further, artificial intelligence must calculate and render video with motion in 3D for all possible cases. They will, of course, strive for maximum naturalness and realism, since options with artifacts are already available in several different services at once.
According to the authors of Runway AI, the magic will be done by an artificial intelligence system that simulates a wide range of situations and interactions similar to those found in the real world. That is, it will try to imitate reality.
As the initiators explained, research in the field of world models has so far focused on very limited and controlled conditions. Usually these are either simulations in video games, or environments within narrow contexts, for example, developing a model of the world for driving.
Stumbling blocks are usually complex movements of cameras or objects within the environment in question. General models of the world are designed to solve these problems, among other things.
At the current stage, Runway AI specialists have formulated several open research tasks: AI models must generate consistent maps of the environment and provide the ability to navigate and interact in this environment; they must also reflect not only the dynamics of the world itself, but also its inhabitants. The latter also involves the creation of realistic models of human behavior.
The developers not only shared their plans, but also invited specialists to join their team. Runway AI did not give any forecasts on the expected release dates for general models of the world.
