The book published by the MUPI “Memories of Tata Fidel” is the life story of Fidel Flores Hernández, who takes the world view of his native community, and his efforts to rescue the original roots, and defines himself in his undertaking: ” I am fire, I am air, I am water and I am earth.” It will be presented this Thursday, October 17, 2024, at six in the evening at the Spanish Center uLocated on Paseo Escalón and 83 Avenida Norte Colonia Escalón, San Salvador.
Carlos Henríquez Consalvi writes in the introduction: “In a lost corner of El Salvador, in 1950, a person who embodies the essence of nature was born: Fidel Flores Hernández. From the roots of his ancestors, this son of the country carries the heritage of his community in the canton of San Ramón, a refuge of resistance near Sonsonate. Fidel is the voice that brings the living memory of people who face adversity and the threat of their extinction. In his story, he immerses us in a relentless fight to preserve the cultural identity of his people.”
Regarding this publication, Fidel Flores expresses: “For me it is important, for the first time ever in history, that I have written this book, with the support of the Museum of Words and Images. These are my memories from childhood, until now, when I am seventy-four years old. This is a historic thing for our community, for our people, it is important to save these memories of customs that we proudly keep in our communities.”
The book, “Memories of Tata Fidel”, is dedicated to his family, to the indigenous communities, and to Doctor Luis Melgar Brizuela, who accompanied this historical memory effort during his life. It contains photographs of indigenous communities taken between 1896-1899 by the Swedish ethnographer Carl V. Hartman, and from the author’s personal archive. The book has already been published by the UES, in several communities, and will be available on the day of the event, and can also be purchased at the MUPI.
