Argentina will experience this Wednesday, 45 days after Javier Milei’s government took office, its first general strike since 2019, called by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), and supported by political parties and social and human rights organizations, among others. .

With the curiosity that the force of the measure will occur during half a day (between 12 and midnight), the union majority will try to display their strength against the reforms of the current Executive that seek to deregulate the economy and implement a series of substantial changes to country level.

The protest is focused on the decree of necessity and urgency (DNU), issued on December 29 (with several points under judicial protection) and the “omnibus law” project that is being debated in the Chamber of Deputies.

“This is surprising because of the silence they have had for so many years,” said presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni yesterday at Casa Rosada.

“We do not understand what puts them to sleep and what wakes them up,” said the spokesperson, referring to the CGT union leaders, and asked that this Wednesday “freedom triumph,” so that “whoever wants to go to work, do it, and whoever wants to stop, let him do so, without curtailing any rights.”

March

The strike day today includes a march that is expected to be massive to the National Congress, in the city of Buenos Aires.

To avoid possible confrontations under the anti-picketing protocol implemented by the Ministry of Security, the union leaders agreed with the Caba Security authorities on the streets through which the mobilization will take place and established circulation routes for emergency vehicles.

In any case, yesterday the Ministry of Security warned the CGT that it is not authorized “to ensure, authorize or restrict any type of circulation.”

“By virtue of the statement issued by the CGT, it is clarified that the union group does not have the capacity nor is it authorized to ensure, authorize or restrict any type of circulation,” they indicated.

But in addition, yesterday a federal judge in La Plata granted a preventive habeas corpus and ordered the authorities of the Ministry of National Security to, within the jurisdiction of that court, refrain from issuing orders for the forces federal agents film or intercept people on public transportation when the strike takes place.

The resolution corresponds to federal judge Ernesto Kreplak and was given in response to a proposal made by a group of people who make up different spaces of environmental militancy.

Services

This Wednesday, public transport will operate throughout the country until 7 p.m. to allow the movement of those who want to get around. Additionally, in the case of Córdoba, there will be intercity transportation throughout the day.

For their part, banks will open until noon, which is when the strike officially begins.

Regarding commerce, there is division, since while the Argentine Federation of Commerce and Services Employees joined, supermarkets plan to open all day.

In Córdoba capital, at least, waste collection will be carried out during the early hours of the morning and until noon. After 12 and until midnight, there will be no service.

In addition, attention to neighbors in the 6 de Julio Palace will be normal, with minimal guards; but the CPCs will remain closed and the appointments granted will be rescheduled.

Regarding flights, the plenary session of the Argentine Confederation of Transport Workers (Catt) resolved the total suspension of air transport services from 12 to 24. The measure covers the unions of the aeronautical sector, which will cause alteration in the entire country (Flybondi will work normally)

In the case of public health, since it is an essential activity, it will have services between 12 and 24, although with fewer personnel in national establishments.

In the provincial ones, the provision of services is guaranteed.

In Córdoba, the objective is to “guarantee a peaceful day”

The Minister of Security of Córdoba, Juan Pablo Quinteros, received general secretaries and representatives of unions and guilds yesterday at the Civic Center within the framework of the national strike.

In Córdoba, the unions will march from the morning, and in the afternoon there will be an event on the strategic Hipólito Yrigoyen avenue.

In two different meetings, the minister informed those present about different aspects related to the security operation. This will be adjusted to the guidelines determined by the protocol established by the Justice of Córdoba and by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which seeks to guarantee the rights of protesters and pedestrians and drivers.

The prosecutor in charge of the actions within the framework of the day of protest is Ernesto de Aragón.

After the meetings, Minister Quinteros said that the objective of the meeting with the unions is to “guarantee a peaceful day” and recalled that in Córdoba there is an action protocol.

The ultimate objective of the operation is that there be no riots or violence of any kind. The Ministry of Security trusts that this is possible, due to the fact that all union organizations are at the forefront of the protest.

Another official objective is to preserve circulation along San Juan Boulevard for as long as possible.
