The Challenges and Delays for the MCU in Phase Four and Five: From Shang-Chi to Avengers

Title: Uncertainty Surrounds Release of “Shang-Chi 2” as MCU Faces Challenges in Phase Four and Five

After the successful conclusion of the Infinity Saga with “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was poised to explore new and weirder territories while introducing fresh and young characters. However, Phase Four and Five have faced significant hurdles, and it appears that the troubles are far from over.

Recently, Simu Liu, star of “Shang-Chi & the Ten Rings,” participated in an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Meta’s latest platform, Threads. During the session, Liu revealed that the release status of his character’s second solo movie, tentatively titled “Shang-Chi 2,” is currently uncertain. Originally intended to follow an “Avengers” movie, the constant delays of these projects beyond Liu’s control have left the future of his film in flux. With the postponement of “Avengers: Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” to May 2026 and May 2027 respectively, there will be a five or six-year gap between Shang-Chi’s titular films.

While Shang-Chi’s predicament is not unique within the MCU, with Doctor Strange experiencing a long gap between his solo films, the latter character had sporadic appearances in other media and a significant role in “Avengers: Infinity War.” Doctor Strange’s importance was established before “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was released. However, it remains uncertain if Shang-Chi can receive similar treatment, considering the already planned upcoming releases. This delay underscores the messiness the MCU has faced in recent years. Even when events beyond the studio’s control, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, have disrupted schedules, the handling of these events has been less than optimal.

The overabundance of releases in 2021 and 2022 has created a crowded landscape for the MCU, which, coupled with other Disney media vying for attention, has made it difficult to forecast the future. However, Disney seems to have learned from these challenges and is now allowing more breathing room for Phase Five projects like “Ironheart” and “Echo.” Nevertheless, the studio faces other significant issues this year, including reports of VFX crunch and abuse allegations against its top-billed stars. Additionally, the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) Strike has further disrupted production schedules. Projects like “Blade” and “Thunderbolts” are delayed indefinitely, while others, like “Deadpool 3” and “Captain America: Brave New World,” are still in production at the time of writing. Moreover, the looming threat of an actors’ strike adds to the uncertainty.

Despite the setbacks, Marvel and Disney are expected to overcome these challenges, unless another unforeseen event causes further delays. However, the series of events that have hampered Phases Four and Five in recent years highlight the studio’s susceptibility to obstacles. Perhaps, taking a more measured approach rather than rushing towards the finish line could serve them better.
