Barcelona Australian cyclist Rohan Dennis, who was twice world time trial champion (in 2018 and 2019) and retired at the end of this season aged 33, has been arrested in Medindie (Australia) accused of fatally hit his wife, ex-cyclist Melissa Hoskins, 32 years old. Dennis, according to Australian media reports, would have run over Hoskins with a van in front of his house yesterday evening. The woman was taken in a critical condition to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where she eventually died.

Australian police charge Dennis with reckless homicide by reckless driving and endangering human life and have released him on bail. It won’t be until March 13 that Dennis is due back in court to face those charges. Dennis and Hoskins had two children together. The last photo Dennis posted to his Instagram account before he allegedly ran over his wife was a family photo of him with Hoskins and their two children wishing Christmas.

Dennis retired a few weeks ago from professional cycling after 17 active seasons. Apart from the two time trial world championships, the Adelaide rider won two stages of the Vuelta a España in 2018 and, in 2015, won the first stage of the Tour de France, breaking the hour record. This last active year, which was in the ranks of the powerful Jumbo-Visma team, finished the Giro d’Italia in 41st position overall and 85th in Paris-Nice. His last appearance as a professional cyclist was on September 8 at the Grand Prix de Québec (Canada), which did not finish.
