Several European Union (EU) countries are considering reintroducing universal conscription to combat manpower shortages in the armed forces.

As Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru, Politico reports this.

As the publication notes, in connection with the armed conflict in Ukraine, European countries have to think about restoring their own forces. For example, Croatia aims to return to universal conscription. Denmark wants to expand it by recruiting women.

Germany is also discussing the introduction of compulsory service for the population due to a shortage of personnel in the armed forces. In 2023, approximately 1,530 soldiers left the Bundeswehr.

France intends to focus on convincing active military personnel not to quit by making military service more attractive to citizens. French Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu said that at NATO meetings, member countries often talk about equipment, but now also about the level of retention of military personnel in the ranks of the armed forces.
