It is a decision that has been hanging over the association’s nose for several months already and the outcome of which was in no doubt. The last Facebook post from “La Citadelle”, dating from last Thursday, invited its members to celebrate Candlemas “for the last time” within its walls. This Wednesday, it is official, the Council of Ministers ratified the dissolution of this association described as extreme right which “incites xenophobia, discrimination, hatred and violence”, welcomes Gérald Darmanin, Minister of ‘interior.

“Thank you to the Minister. Those who call for hatred have no place in our country! “, tweeted the mayor of Lille. Because what Martine Aubry had dreamed of for years, Gérald Darmanin obtained it in two months. It must be said that if the mayor of Lille had had the same weapons as the Minister of the Interior, she would have used them a long time ago. Anyway, the result is there and “The Citadel” is no more. Run by a former executive of Génération Identitaire, singled out by an Al Jazeera documentary as sheltering neo-Nazis, the scene of controversial evenings, the association was dissolved. “Absolute firmness against the spreaders of hate”, hammered on “X” Gérald Darmaninauthor of the decree signed by the President of the Republic serving as a death sentence for a defeated Citadel.

“Hate”, “discrimination”, “xenophobia”

In the three-page text, the grievances made against the association are listed. “Notwithstanding its social purpose”, the “promotion of local identities”, the association “in reality promotes […] an ideology inciting discrimination, hatred and violence against people of non-European origin and people of Muslim faith.” According to the decree, the association “recurrently justifies […] the implementation of a xenophobic ideology”. Allegations supported by examples of media interventions by its president “M. A”.

It is further denounced that the association has been “propagating for several years” a discourse “systematically equating non-European people with delinquents”. Arguments over three pages that we are not going to list for you here. However, it will be up to the association to defend itself point by point if its president decides to contest the dissolution before the Council of State. Contacted by 20 Minutes, “La Citadelle” has not yet responded.
