The Trans-Caspian international transport route, the so-called Middle Corridor, could become an important link between China and the EU.
As Day.Az reports on Tuesday, this was stated by Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan – Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmet Hajiyev in an interview with the Global Times.
“Most importantly, we consider the China-Azerbaijan partnership to be significant within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, especially in the context of the Middle Corridor, which could become an important link between China and the EU,” he said.
According to him, Azerbaijan, along with the countries of Central Asia located along the Caspian and Black Seas, can be strong partners in the field of transport links.
“This fits well with the Belt and Road Initiative and underlines the strategic partnership between China and Azerbaijan,” he emphasized.
Hajiyev also mentioned that Azerbaijan sees a steady increase in trade relations with China.
“But this is not the final goal. I would like to see more Chinese companies in Azerbaijan. Chinese companies are already participating in the diversification of the Azerbaijani economy, but we expect more as Azerbaijan moves towards green growth,” Hajiyev added.
Note that the Middle Corridor connects the container rail transport networks of China and the countries of the European Union through Central Asia, the South Caucasus, Turkey and Eastern Europe.
A multilateral multimodal transport infrastructure links ferry terminals on the Caspian and Black Seas with the railway systems of China, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Ukraine and Poland.
The middle corridor contributes to an increase in cargo traffic from China to Turkey, as well as to Europe and vice versa.
