The Nigerian army denied carrying out attacks in retaliation for the killing of 16 of its soldiers in Delta state in the south of the country, while residents accused the army of burning the village of Okwama.

Since last Sunday, videos of burning homes along the Forcados River have spread on social media.

Residents in the oil-rich region accused the army of targeting the village of Okwama after announcing the killing of the soldiers on Saturday.

The army said, “The soldiers were killed after young men from the area surrounded them as they were trying to mediate between the residents of the Okwama village, who belong to the Urhobo ethnicity, and the residents of the Okoloba village, whose residents belong to the Ijaw ethnicity.”

Defense Ministry spokesman General Edward Buba denied accusations of retaliation, describing them as “fake news.”

“The army refutes all allegations that the army launched revenge attacks in Okwama village after the incident,” Buba said.
