MADRID, 23 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Party (PASOK), Nikos Androulakis, has rejected on Tuesday the proposal of the Greek president, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, to form a government, thus leading Greece to repeat the elections, foreseeably at the end of next June .

“The popular verdict shows that there is no room for convergence,” said Androulakis, leader of the party with the third most seats in the Greek Parliament after last Sunday’s elections, which leave a parliamentary arithmetic in which agreements have been impossible. .

The New Democracy (ND) of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emerged as the great winner of these elections with 40.79 percent of the votes and 145 of the 300 seats in Parliament. However, the lack of allies has prevented Mitsotakis for the moment from the possibility of renewing his mandate.

After ND, the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) of former prime minister and current opposition leader Alexis Tsipras won 20.07 percent of the vote and 72 seats. Both Mitsotakis and Tsipras have rejected Sakellaropoulou’s proposal to form a government, according to the newspaper ‘Kathimerini’.

Thus, after the refusal to form a government by the three most voted parties, the Greek head of state must now bring together the country’s political leaders to confirm the situation and form a temporary executive whose sole mission is to call for elections.

Therefore, the Parliament resulting from the elections last weekend will meet only once –probably on Sunday– to swear in the elected deputies and sign the presidential decree for the dissolution of the Chambers and the calling of elections in a period of 30 days.

In view of the Greek electoral legislation, the most probable date to celebrate the repetition of the elections is June 25.
