The Port Authority of Valencia (APV) and Valencia Terminal Europa (VTE), belonging to the Grimaldi Group, have signed an agreement to regulate the installation, operation and maintenance of a new photovoltaic infrastructure under construction on the vehicle silo in the VTE concession in the East Dock.

The new plant, which will generate approximately 11% of the electricity necessary for the operation of the port, is part of a joint strategy between the public body and the Grimaldi Group to achieve decarbonization and achieve the “Zero Emissions Objective” in the Valencian docks.

It should be noted that the photovoltaic plant, run by the Temporary Business Union (UTE) composed of Lantania SAU and Tecmo Instalaciones, involves an investment of more than 16 million euros by the Valencian enclave, with financing from the Next Generation funds. of the European Union and the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Government of Spain.

Positioned on the roof of the terminal operated by Grupo Grimaldi, the solar plant covers 27,700 m² and will have 10,773 photovoltaic modules on an inclined metal structure. Likewise, four transformers will be integrated into two transformation centers with two units of 1,250 kilovoltamperes each and two others of 1,600 kVA, which will generate more than 9,000 Mwh/year.

This is the second plant awarded by the Port Authority in the Valencian enclave, complementing the first in the Príncipe Felipe dock. Together, they will represent 14% of the port’s electricity consumption. Furthermore, the Port of Valencia is already evaluating different areas to implement a third photovoltaic plant, with the aim of increasing the use of clean energy by 2030.

In parallel with these solar projects, the PAV is implementing sustainability actions to achieve the strategic objective of “Valenciaport 2030: zero emissions”. Among its plans is the installation of wind turbines, construction of electrical substations, use of hydrogen in port activity and promotion of the railway in the ports of Sagunto and Valencia.

Apart from working for a clean energy port environment, the Board of Directors of the Port of Valencia has recently approved the document that establishes the legal-economic conditions for the tender for the new container terminal.
