The STD Epidemic in the USA: Rising Cases and Prevention Measures

Condoms, free testing stations and many other measures serve to prevent the spread of STDs to prevent. However, not all people have access to these opportunities. Especially in developing countries, sexually transmitted infections, also known as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), are sprouting almost without any hurdles. The same applies to the United States.

STDs: USA is experiencing an epidemic

At the end of January, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published its STD Surveillance Report for 2022. The report reveals record levels for the spread of chlamydia and syphilis, underscoring the US government’s difficulties in dealing with this epidemic .

The CDC saw an 80 percent increase in syphilis cases alone between 2018 and 2022 – including 3,755 cases of congenital syphilis. While gonorrhea saw a slight decrease from 2021 to 2022, the numbers for this sexually transmitted disease are still alarming. The data shows “our nation is facing a rapidly deteriorating public health crisis with real lives at stake,” the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD) said in its latest statement.

“STIs – particularly syphilis – will continue to spiral out of control until the administration and Congress give communities the resources they need to provide the most basic screening, treatment and prevention services.”

While the number of syphilis cases registered annually between 2018 and 2022 also increased slightly in Germany, it is by no means comparable to the situation in the USA, with an increase from 7,373 to 8,309 (+12%). Comparatively small fluctuations like this can also be attributed, at least in part, to the growing awareness of sexually transmitted diseases and their risks among the population.

In many major German cities you have the opportunity to be tested for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and many other sexually transmitted diseases – often free of charge and almost always anonymously. Take advantage of these offers and help protect your love life and that of your partners.
