The new part of the saga wants to return to the atmosphere of the first sci-fi horror films about Aliens, which were filmed by directors Ridley Scott and James Cameron in the 70s and 80s of the last century. On Wednesday evening, 20th Century Studios released the first trailer for it. The film called Alien: Romulus will also start showing in Czech cinemas in August.

As Variety.com writes, the trailer begins with a shot of a spaceship arriving at the station. The vessel vaguely resembles the ships Nostromo and Sulaco from the original films. Subsequently, the audience will catch a glimpse of the young members of the crew, or what is left of some of them. The group, which flew to colonize an unknown world and met the “most terrible form of life in the universe” on the way, is led by a pair of women. They are played by Cailee Spaeny, who recently gained attention for her role as Priscilla Presley, and Isabela Merced from the superhero Madam Web.

Alien: Romulus will be the seventh installment in the saga and the ninth in total to feature horror monsters called Aliens. In the new millennium, she also acted in two parts of the separate series Alien vs. Predator.

The news was filmed by the forty-six-year-old Uruguayan director Fede Álvarez, who is credited with the film The Girl in the Spider’s Web or the series Conversations. It takes place between the first and second volumes, between which 57 years have passed.

“Intruder: Romulus is set about twenty years after the first film, and I don’t think it would turn the existing canon on its head,” says the director, who is said to have discussed the script at length with Ridley Scott and James Cameron beforehand. “When the film was finished, I showed it to both of them,” he adds. According to earlier statements, both Scott and Cameron are delighted with the result.

Álvarez emphasizes that “a lot” of tricksters from the original films worked on the new film. “We recruited the people who did the effects for Aliens, i.e. the second part, to the team. At that time they were twenty and just starting out. Today they are at the peak of their powers,” boasts the director.

But most of all, he wanted to return to his roots. “By that I mean not only the style of the original films, but the entire genre in general. I wanted to take the pure horror that formed the basis of the first Alien and combine it with the thriller component of the second and third films,” promises Fede Álvarez.

At the same time, according to him, viewers do not have to worry that the new product will look retro. “For me, Alien was always at its best when it scared people and when it was a thriller,” the director suggests in an interview with Variety.com about the effect he wanted to achieve.

According to The Hollywood Reporter website, the film includes, for example, an unspecified scene with actress Isabela Merced, during which about ten cast members looked away in disgust. In this case, the director tried to achieve a similar shock, as when in the original Alien from 1979, a monster popped out of one character’s chest.

Alien: Romulus was originally supposed to premiere only on the online platform Hulu, similar to last year’s Predator: Prey produced by the Disney+ video library. However, the producers eventually changed their minds, and even before filming began, the decision was made that the film would go to theaters.

The sci-fi series, founded by Ridley Scott in the late 1970s, was revived at the beginning of the last decade thanks to the not so well-received film Prometheus. The follow-up Alien: Covenant from 2017 was an even bigger hit with critics, although it ended up grossing nearly a quarter of a billion dollars worldwide and was a modest commercial success.
