It was in the 2017 IPL when Steve Smith captained Rising Pune Supergiants that Dhoni was captained as a player. Steve Smith said he got nervous especially when the team owners asked him to captain. Smith succeeded MS Dhoni as the captain of the Pune team in the 2017 season. In the previous season, the Supergiants team had won only 5 out of 14 games and finished at the 7th position. Missed the play-off opportunity. Smith scored a century in that season but returned to the country halfway through due to injury.
Speaking to Star Sports, Steve Smith revealed that he was keen to take over from MS Dhoni, who has rich experience in captaincy and how Dhoni helped him in every possible way.
Speaking to Star Sports, Smith said, “When I got the call to say that the team management wanted me to be the captain, it was a bit difficult, but that season, MS Dhoni was fantastic. You know, he helped in every way he could, he was a rare man. I didn’t know what to expect from him in the beginning, you know, MS. Dhoni has captained every team he has played for.
It was then that the team management asked me if I would take over the captaincy. I don’t know what to say. It was a little shocking. I mean, did they first talk to Dhoni about appointing me as captain? Isn’t it? I don’t know that. But somehow when the issues were resolved it was realized that Dhoni is a wonderful person.
The way he helped me that year and led the team was unbelievable. Yeah, I can’t thank him enough. I think only the composure shown by MS, we saw composure and composure in him throughout his cricketing career. He was so calm.
