The National Archive of Catalonia exhibits in Sant Cugat del Vallès forty photographs that the photographer Dora Maar took in Barcelona, Sea Cough and Agaró in 1933. The exhibition, under the title Dora Maar. Travel to Cataloniaserves to show the public the acquisition that the institution made of some of the negatives of the photographer and also painter, often overshadowed by her relationship with Pablo Picasso, which appeared in a box a few years ago.

The exhibition, which can be visited until July 20 as part of the Sant Cugat del Vallès Light Festival, is curated by art historian Victòria Combalíawho points out that they are not the result of any commission, but of a pleasure trip.

In September 1933, now 90 years ago, Dora Maar took a trip to Catalonia. She made the trip alone and stayed at the famous Orient Hotel on the Rambla in Barcelona. They are a witness to this journey the negatives that were in a box that appeared a few years ago and that was auctioned in the summer of 2022, at the Artcurial auction house in Paris.

In the judgment of Victòria Combalia, in that short stay in Catalonia, Dora Maar not only left us unique documents but also created some of the best photographs of his entire production.

They are photographs of people walking, sellers and fishermen in the Costa Brava area. “Street people, but above all he had a predilection for the poor” and also “the blind, because it may be that, since in surrealism closed eyes represent the inner gaze, this interested him”, says Combalía.

The exhibition includes portraits of the Rambla de Barcelona, ​​the Mercat de la Boqueria and the Somorrostro, in addition to eight traditionalist images of Tossa and s’Agaróa place where Dora Maar at the same time interacted with artists and intellectuals, Catalan and foreign, who had already made the Costa Brava their scene of creation.
