Tina Knowles-Lawson has come to her daughter Beyonce’s defense amid recent criticism the “Renaissance” artist received over a social media photo. In a lengthy Instagram post, Knowles fired back at “racist statements” about Beyonce’s Versace look, which she wore for a pair of portraits shared by designer Donatella Versace to coincide with the release of “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.”
Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” film premiered in Los Angeles on Saturday, and the singer seemingly skipped the red carpet, which featured guests wearing mostly black and silver looks in tribute to the chrome aesthetic of the album and tour. Knowles addressed the criticism directly in her Instagram post. “She does a film, called the renaissance, where the whole theme is silver with silver hair, a silver carpet, and suggested silver attire and you bozos decide that she’s trying to be a white woman and is bleaching her skin?” Knowles wrote. “How sad is it that some of her own people continue the stupid narrative with hate and jealousy.”
She also pointed out the long history of black women wearing platinum hair, stating, “Black women have worn platinum hair since the Etta James days. I just went and looked at all the beautiful talented black celebrities who have worn platinum hair and it has been just about everyone of them at one time or another. Are they all trying to be white? I am sick and tired of people attacking her.”
