The French Track Cycling Championships began with a big drama this Thursday at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines velodrome. While the public was just beginning to arrive in the stands of the track where the events of the discipline will take place at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (from August 5 to 11), an announcement from the announcer somewhat chilled the atmosphere. He in fact announced Mathilde Gros as a non-runner just before her entry into the women’s speed event.

The 2022 world speed champion was nevertheless present in her corner in outfit. But the extreme whiteness of his face clearly betrayed his condition. Beside him, his parents wore masks. Mathilde Gros then got dressed and left the Vélodrome. “She tried but she is sick, probably gastro. “She’s out of luck, she’s going to rest, because there are people from Europe coming,” says her father Maurice.

These French Championships were only a back-to-school event for Mathilde Gros who was to compete this Thursday in speed and Friday in keirin, two titles she won last year. But the first real deadline in the Olympic race will be the European Championships next week (January 10 to 14) in Apeldoorn (Netherlands). The sprinter from Salon-de-Provence, who needs to reassure herself after mixed Scottish Worlds in August, has a few days to recover from this little break.
