Former US President Donald Trump stressed that the United States should not defend NATO countries that do not pay their dues to the alliance.

Trump wrote on the “Truth Social” platform, commenting on President Joe Biden’s State of the Union message that he delivered on Thursday evening at Congressional Headquarters: “I said that NATO countries must pay their bills, and if they do not pay, we will not protect you.”

Trump made a similar statement last month during an election rally, where he said he would encourage Russia to do “whatever the hell it wants” to any NATO member state that “doesn’t pay enough to the alliance’s budget.”

Trump also considered that the conflict in Ukraine began due to “Russian President Vladimir Putin’s lack of respect for his American counterpart Joe Biden.” He added that “this would never have happened during the Trump administration.”

In his State of the Union message, Biden accused Trump of subservience to the Russian president, claiming that he told Putin to “do whatever you want with NATO countries.”

Biden called on Congress to continue providing assistance to Ukraine, warning that freedom and democracy are under attack at home and abroad.
