Russia Disputes Trump Claim of India Ending Russian Oil Trade Amidst New US Deal

A recently finalized trade agreement between the US and India has been overshadowed by conflicting statements regarding India’s future oil purchases from Russia.
Days after former US President Donald Trump asserted that India would cease its oil trade with Russia as part of the new trade deal, Russian officials have publicly questioned the claim. The dispute highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics at play as nations navigate energy security and international alliances.
Trade Deal & Trump’s Assertion
On February 2, Trump announced a trade deal with India, resolving months of negotiations. The agreement included a reduction of reciprocal tariffs on Indian imports from 25% to 18%. However, Trump also claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had agreed to halt India’s oil trade with Russia, framing the move as potentially contributing to an end to the war in Ukraine.
While India confirmed the tariff reductions, it remained silent on Trump’s assertion regarding Russian energy ties. This silence fueled speculation and prompted a response from Moscow.
Russia Rejects “Dictation” on Trade Policy
Russia’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, swiftly dismissed Trump’s claim, stating that Moscow sees no indication India would alter its approach to energy cooperation with Russia. “The US President trying to dictate who an independent nation like India can trade with is not new,” Zakharova said. She emphasized that Russia does not believe its “Indian friends” have changed their stance, adding that the trade of resources is mutually beneficial.
“We remain convinced that India’s purchase of Russian hydrocarbons is beneficial to both countries and contributes to maintaining stability in the international energy market,” Zakharova continued, as reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI). “We are ready to continue close cooperation in this area with our partners in India.”
India’s Sovereignty & Existing Trade Ties
Dmitry Peskov, Russia’s Press Secretary, offered a slightly different perspective, asserting that India is free to purchase oil from any country. “We, along with all other international energy experts, are well aware that Russia is not the only supplier of oil and petroleum products to India,” Peskov stated, according to PTI. “India has always purchased these products from other countries. Therefore, we see nothing new here.”
The relationship between India and Russia in the energy sector has been a point of contention with the United States. Last year, Trump doubled tariffs on Indian imports to 50%, citing India’s continued trade with Russia.
No Official Confirmation from India
As of this report, India has not officially responded to Trump’s claim regarding the cessation of Russian oil purchases. Peskov confirmed that Russia has not received any statements from India indicating a change in policy. The lack of direct communication from New Delhi leaves the future of this crucial energy partnership uncertain.
The situation underscores India’s strategic position as it balances relationships with both the US and Russia, navigating a complex global landscape.
