The Deputy Prime Minister spoke at the international conference on demining in Lausanne, Switzerland, which was also attended by the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Minister Denis Shmihals.

Ukraine has hundreds of thousands of mines, cluster munitions and unexploded ordnance left in combat zones by Russian and Ukrainian forces over vast areas.

The conference is attended by representatives from around 50 countries, as well as demining organizations, scientists and companies that manufacture demining equipment.

The representative of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pēters Reiss, said that Berlin allocates approximately 20 million euros annually to demining efforts.

He expressed hope that the conference would provide “new insights into how mines and explosive remnants of war could be removed more quickly, efficiently and cheaply.”

Artificial intelligence was a “big topic” at the conference, Reiss told the DPA news agency.

Artificial intelligence could be used, for example, to determine where mines are located, he said.
