The end of institutional gridlock in Northern Ireland is getting closer. The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has reached an agreement with the British Government to restore the Stormont Parliament and re-form an Executive in Belfast two years after it left in protest at the pacts reached between London and Brussels after the Brexit. The formation notes that the new deal consolidates Northern Ireland within the UK’s internal market and addresses unionist concerns following criticism of the Irish Protocol and the Windsor Framework Agreement, which establish a “soft” border in the Irish Sea.

The details of this deal have not yet been released, although DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson pointed to the removal of any red tape for goods being shipped to Northern Ireland from the Great Britain, known as the “green way”. “For our part, the greenway will disappear and be replaced by the United Kingdom’s internal market system, which reflects the reality that goods moving around the country do so freely,” Donaldson explained at a press conference yesterday. The unionist leader assured his people that the agreement with the British Government, which includes legislative changes that will have to be approved in the Westminster Parliament, will end the influence of European legislation in Northern Ireland. The EU has avoided commenting on the agreement for now.
