Over the past two and a half months, the people of Israel and the opposition parties have led a great struggle in history. Thousands of people are gathering in many major cities of the country, including Tel Aviv, to protest ‘What is happening in Israel..?’ As it keeps the countries of the world looking back.
Why this struggle? – Prime Minister Netanyahu is involved in various reform measures to change the judicial system in Israel. In other words, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s efforts to control the power of the judiciary and restore the balance between the power of the judiciary and the power of the government have now turned against him.
What are the changes: Netanyahu plans to introduce three major changes to Israel’s justice system. They are:
* Reviewing the laws of Israel’s Supreme Court and reducing its powers. For example, court orders can be overridden by a majority in Parliament.
* Increasing the representation of the government in the appointing committee of judges, including the Supreme Court. This will create an environment where the government will take a decisive decision on who should be a judge.
* Israeli ministers are not required to obey the advice of their legal advisers.
Israel’s parliament has passed a law removing the power of a Supreme Court judge to declare a sitting prime minister ‘unfit to hold office’, the first of a series of reform measures.
Agitated protest… – The people of Israel and the country’s opposition parties have led a historic struggle against the stance that these reforms to the justice sector will push the country’s democracy into the abyss.
More than 200,000 people took to the streets this week in the country’s commercial capital, Tel Aviv, to continue their 12-week protest. Also, the security of the country is being called into question as the Israeli security forces have also refused to come to work due to their dissatisfaction with the government.
Meanwhile, Defense Minister Gallant, who is part of Netanyahu’s cabinet, said that the protests in the country are causing concern. At this point, Netanyahu fired Gallant from his ministerial post for his comments. The sacked Gallant was one of the most experienced and popular ministers in the government. His removal from the ministerial post has led more Israelis to take to the streets to protest.
Many people were injured in the baton attack by the police and the army on the protestors. Thousands of people have been arrested. However, people do not give up their struggle and keep coming. People continue to protest, insisting on the single demand that Netanyahu roll back his reform measures on the justice sector.
Israel and Netanyahu: Considered the most powerful of Israel’s right-wing leaders, Netanyahu served as prime minister from 1996 to 1999 and from 2009 to the present. It is said that Israel’s youth have come forward in their stance against Netanyahu, who has been in power for years. In that way, Israeli youth and leftists see this protest as an opportunity to remove Netanyahu from office.
In this context, the reality is that the campaign has really made Netanyahu nervous. It is for this that he has postponed the time frame for implementing other reforms. Also, he is inviting the protestors and opposition parties for dialogue.
Speaking about the protest, Netanyahu said, “I will not allow this country to fall apart. I am ready to negotiate. I am giving an opportunity for that. He is also adamant that the justice system will not be weakened by these reforms.
Negotiations between the Israeli government and the protesters in the coming days are crucial. The message of the people of Israel through this campaign is that Netanyahu’s position will be decided based on this!
