US accepts Taiwan’s request to join Interpol: China suffers setback

Washington: The United States has approved Taiwan’s application to become part of Interpol. Taiwan is set to become part of Interpol, an international police force, following its accession to the Global Health Organization. This is despite strong opposition from China.

Interpol has said it will recognize Taiwan as an observer state at next week’s global conference. Taiwan’s request was approved by 71 U.S. delegates. Taiwan is currently a friend and partner of the United States.

Taiwan has said that Interpol will be of great help to the country’s internal security and to the extradition of criminals. Meanwhile, tensions between China and the United States over Taiwan remain high. China has threatened to consider any intervention in Taiwan as an invasion.
