US imposes sanctions on 150 other Putin supportersIn response to Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine, the USA is expanding its sanctions against supporters of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. More than 150 people and companies will be subject to new punitive measures, the State and Treasury Departments announced on Thursday in Washington. The aim is to “target Russia’s military supply chains and deprive Putin of the equipment, technology and services he needs for his barbaric war against Ukraine,” said Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. Those who benefited from the invasion and their proximity to the Kremlin would also be held accountable.
Many of the sanctions are aimed directly at Russian industry. The wagon manufacturer Transmash, the car manufacturers Avtovaz and Moskvich and the aircraft engine manufacturer Soyuz in Moscow were added to the sanctions list. Large Russian engineering companies, metallurgical and mining companies were also sanctioned. Gazpromstroy, the construction group of the gas giant Gazprom, is also new on the list, as is Russia’s second largest diamond company AGD Diamonds. In addition, companies in third countries, such as two Turkish companies that are supposed to supply parts for drone construction in Russia, were also hit with sanctions.
The head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Andriy Yermak, thanked the USA for this “decisive step”.
