Starting in the second quarter of 2024 and until the end of 2025, the Volkswagen factory in Navarrea will work two and a half shifts, which will reduce the need for personnel at the Landaben plant by 400 people. This was communicated by the plant’s Production Director, Miguel Ángel Grijalba, to the works committee, during the first meeting of the negotiating table of the 10th Collective Agreement.

The address of Volkswagen Navarra has proposed to the committee the creation of a collective agreement that covers the transition period towards the electric car between the years 2024 and 2026. Based on the fact that the production programs are provisional, “because they change depending on the evolution of products on the market”, the director of Planning Engineering of the company, David García Castaño, has communicated, taking the planned data as a reference, that the production forecast for the year 2024 is around 255,000 cars.

The planned production volume for 2025 is 215,000 vehicles. And in 2026, the year of launch of the two electric models – a Skoda and a Volkswagen ID2X -, the production volume is estimated at 200,000 units, which include combustion and electric models.

Once the launch curves have been completed, production volumes of 350,000 cars each year are planned for 2027 and 2028, “figures that will allow us to recover and even exceed current employment figures,” the management of Volkswagen Navarra explained in a statement.

In addition, he has conveyed that the fact that the factory is prepared to flexibly and simultaneously produce electric and combustion cars is a “guarantee for the future”, since it “protects production levels against possible fluctuations in the market.”

David García has finally communicated that the level of planned investments is maintained and that “in fact, investments planned for 2025 have been brought forward.”

UGT at Volkswagen Navarra has stated that they see it as “positive” that “there is an improvement in production volumes for the years 2024, 2025 and 2026”, while commenting that, given the organizational measures and the surplus of personnel proposed from the management, they have been preparing proposals “in anticipation of this moment that we were aware was going to arrive”

From this union they maintain that their objective is to “establish the tools that ensure the guarantees we need to go through these years in the best way for the workforce: guarantees of our industrial plan and investments, guarantees of employability, guarantees of an exit plan and guarantees of our purchasing power.

The president of the Volkswagen Navarra works council, Alfredo Morales, has indicated that “all the news that reaches us” goes in the direction that finally the automobile group will not install a battery factory at its Landaben site and will entrust the supply to hyundai.

The president of the works council has assured that “we are now focused on negotiating and agreeing with the company management on a collective agreement that will allow us to face this downturn that we are going to go through in the years 2024 and 2025 – due to the drop in sales volume and the transition to the electric vehicle – and guarantee employability from 2026.

Alfredo Morales has recognized that “the battery factory would have been very important for our plant and for our industrial project.” “I still think it is a mistake that the factory is 8 kilometers from our plant,” he lamented.
