Cike Osama bin Laden or Imam Khomeini before him, Vladimir Putin is at war with the devil. He failed to “denazify” Ukraine; he goes there “desataneize”. The shift is not only semantic. The use of apocalyptic rhetoric could herald even more heinous crimes than those Moscow has perpetrated for the past nine months. The Russo-Ukrainian war is now likened by Kremlin propagandists to a struggle between Good and Evil, between the Archangel Michael, in the person of the Russian President, and the Antichrist, embodied by the West.

Putin had bet on the inconsistency of the Ukrainian nation and the weakness of its American and European support. Only a supernatural intervention could therefore explain kyiv’s resistance and humiliation…
