30 years ago, there were neither fishing magazines nor programs dedicated to fishing in Latvia, there was no Internet yet, and not even the s zivs competition. Then, on March 19, 1994, a whole first page was devoted to fishing, specifically to ice fishing, which is now called ice fishing On Saturday with an article in God’s place above the waters. Because there was ice in winters for a longer period of time than in recent years and also for ice skaters, for many it was not only a form of entertainment, but also a significant source of livelihood or supplementing the budget. On Saturday more emphasis was placed on the emotional side of ice skating, trying to find out what attracts people – mostly old people, and also a lady – to the ice, especially in spring, when the ice can be dangerous or at least treacherous.

“Archaeologists have found the skeleton of a man with wide open arms and a fractured skull near Lake Burtnieku,” the author of these lines began the message. “This shows that even the first inhabitants of our land, the ancient fishermen, had the vice of squandering their catch and that primitive women reacted quite inadequately to jokes related to being away from the family. It should also be taken into account that the ancient breadwinners of the family lying was incomparably more difficult because, as the found skeleton shows, they had short legs. Therefore, through natural or protosocial selection, the short-legged were eradicated in the territory of Latvia and the slim type of Latvian was formed, who never lies. But he is drawn to the water as strongly as our distant ancestors.
