Chennai,- ‘What will be done with the sugarcane currently available in the ration shops after distribution in the Pongal gift package?’ The Registrar of Co-operative Societies has written to the Commissioner of Food Supply.

The Cooperatives and Food Department has instructed the shop staff to provide the Pongal gift package to the cardholders who have not purchased after the deadline.
Ration shops have stock of sugarcane as many of the cardholders prefer to buy cash only. The price of a whole cane was fixed at a maximum of Rs.
Accordingly, the government allocated Rs 72.38 crore for the purchase of sugarcane alone.
In this case, in a letter written by the Registrar of Cooperative Societies to the Commissioner of Food Supply Department on 20th, he has requested to give advice regarding the handling of sugarcane in stock in the ration shops when the Pongal gift package is distributed to the card holders.
