What we saw last night: 5 series that got us through this week, and maybe the next one as well

by time news

Every evening we publish our night viewing recommendation here on the “Time Out” website. We aim low: things you can watch at night without burning your brain with an overdose of stupidity – you can do that yourself – even if they are not supertemporal masterpieces. The recommendations are sometimes based on watching individual episodes that show potential, but you are definitely welcome to complain about us in the secret Facebook group “The spoiler: what are you seeing today”. In honor of the weekend and for your convenience, we are grouping all the recommendations in one place for the traditional end-of-the-weekend binge, ranked according to how much we like them.

1. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Even if you have minimal interest in gaming, you’ve probably heard of “Cyberpunk 2077” – the highly hyped game that spent seven years in development and when it finally came out, disappointed the vast majority of its players. But whether you loved or hated “Cyberpunk 2077″ as a game, or whether you’re just into cyberpunk, or anime, or MDB, or just looking for something to watch tonight – that game spawned a ten-episode Netflix series, and it’s just great.” Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” is a story that takes place in the same world, more or less in the same times (and there are even links to the story of the game, but they are completely there as a bonus and really not required to know). The story is a kind of classic mafia story, only in a disturbed futuristic world with lots of lights Neon, gunshots and cybernetic implants: a junior street criminal’s journey to the top ranks of the gang – and all the prices he has to pay on the way to the top. And yes, there’s plenty of sex and violence (note that the trailer we’ve attached below is a “NSFW trailer”. On the other hand, we really hope you’re not at work now. late).

Lately, Netflix has been putting quite a lot of effort into game adaptations. If it used to be about slandered content that gave us flops like the “Street Fighter” movie, then last year, for example, such a collaboration with the game League of Legends gave us the excellent “Arcane”, and before that – the not bad “The Witcher” at all. By the way, “The Witcher” is based, among other things, on the three games of the same name, whose tremendous success (especially the third game in the series) is what built the success of the Polish gaming company CDPR, which used all this hype to bring us… “Cyberpunk 2077”. So call it closing the circle.

2. Traitor

The plot of “Traitor” begins with a passenger plane from Israel to Bangkok disappearing – wait, don’t go anywhere. We know that starting a new drama series from the disappearance of a plane conjures up particularly tiresome television associations for most of us, but nothing supernatural is going to happen here, the plane is not going to reappear a few years later, no one will develop telepathic abilities (we really hope. first two episodes to watch) and sure and sure there is not going to be any island. Instead, we’re here with Ron Leshem’s new drama (“Beaufort,” “Lockdown Time,” and of course “Euphoria,” whose format export to the United States is one of the disruptive TV success stories that started here). “Traitor” was already filmed two years ago, but for some reason it’s coming to the screens only now, after it appeared in a lot of “HOT drama series for 2020” lists (maybe its disappearance is the real mystery here?).

Lior Ashkenazi in the lead role plays Georgi, an experienced Shin Bet investigator who was injured in the line of duty, lost his sight and had to retire from the service. He has no choice but to involve himself in the investigation again when he discovers that his wife and children were on the missing plane, on their way to leave The country – and him. Of course, the identities of the other 225 passengers will begin to reveal, as promised in the trailer, another “225 secrets” – and the more and more of them are revealed, the more family members, friends and spouses will begin to suspect their loved ones who disappeared along with the plane. Other than that in the cast: Oz Zahavi as a young Shevchenko and Georgi’s assistant (although in the trailer he mostly shouts from him), Niv Sultan, Orna Banai, Raymond Amsalem and much more. Directed by Assaf Polonsky (the excellent “Week and Day”). And the best part: a short season of eight episodes, so we won’t have to wait forever to find out what the hell happened there.

“traitor”, Weekly broadcasts starting Thursday (15.9) 20:15 on HOT3 as well as on HOT VOD/Next TV

3. The disturbed

Juan, Tilda and Avi are three twenty-year-olds who participated in a mysterious experiment by a scientist in their youth that looks like a combination of Willy Wonka and Conan O’Brien, but actually deals more with the fields of genetic enhancement. You know, this field that everyone who works (on the screen! only on the screen!) is probably Seiko. And that Dr. Serkov – wonderfully played by the Australian comedian Rhys Nicholson – is definitely psycho. When the dear doctor decides to cut off their access to the pills that prevented them from suffering the side effects, they start to… well, suffer from the side effects. You can probably already guess that it’s not a migraine And swelling, eh?

If it weren’t so annoying, the side effects could be considered superpowers. One begins to spread pheromones and make everyone fall in love, the other experiences super hearing and a voice that can shatter glass and more, and the last becomes a predatory and murderous monster. That is, to the Chupacabra – the mythological monster of the South American countries. In fact, the three heroes are inspired by legendary monsters – the screaming banshee of Irish mythology and the succubus, the exotic field that seduces men from English culture. Despite all this mystical description, the style of the series is rather light, and reminds a lot of the blood-panic-suspense-comedy mix of “The Boys”, the best superhero series on the screen. And even without cloaks, there is a group of outcasts here who turn out to be the real heroes, lots of wit, disgusting fools and at least one huge villain. Well Netflix, you’re in for a surprise.
“The Imperfects”, season one is now available on Netflix

4. Cobra Kai

Even five years after she returned to kicking, the story of “Cobra Kai” remains unbelievable. The sequel to the hit movie series that made every child in the eighties look for the sensei closest to their home saw a rather modest beginning, with a first season on YouTube’s subscription service and a second season that made it popular, but not a hit. It wasn’t until it moved to Netflix in January 2021, with its third season, that the hype exploded, and suddenly everyone wanted to put on a karate suit again and be able to kick the air with the weak leg.

And it must be said, the hype was certainly justified, and after a somewhat weak third season, the fourth season brought back the action and enthusiasm (and also about all the villains in the history of the franchise), just in time for the fifth season, which premiered on Netflix over the weekend. To remind you (or for those who lost the The Most Beaten Storyline) In the finale of the previous season Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso teamed up again for one last moment, only to lose the important tournament to Cobra Kai, who was finally kidnapped by John Criss and the real Eighties villain Terry Silver. Although they lost as a result of Silver’s cheating , Daniel Sun has already given his word that he will close Miyagi Dojo. There are also complements and conflicts between the children and Miguel is going to Mexico and Johnny after him.
“Cobra Kai”, the fifth season (and its predecessors, of course) are available on Netflix

5. The Handmaid’s Tale

“The Handmaid’s Tale” was approved for development in April 2016, just as Donald Trump was on his presidential campaign all the way to the White House, and when it hit the screens a little over a year later – it seemed as if it had accidentally summoned some raging apocalypse (so much so that anti-regime protesters in the United States adopted the The red uniforms of the handmaids from the series as ironic protest uniforms). The series, whose first season was based on Margaret Atwood’s classic novel, about the lives of women under the religious-fanatical regime of the extreme Christian Republic of Gilead that arose with the destruction of the United States, had no mercy on the viewers – neither with the issues they dealt with nor with the extreme violence Sometimes the series goes there, with some infamous torture scenes. Fortunately, the situation has calmed down since then, absolutely no real epidemic broke out (like in the world of the series) and it’s not like someone in the United States, say, banned abortion. So now you can enjoy the series simply for what it is – dark dystopian entertainment that has no connection to reality. Right? Right.

The later seasons of “The Handmaid’s Tale” took John (Bashurok), the heroine played by the mighty Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men”) from being a victim of the Republic of Gilead to being its No. 1 enemy, and in the past season – and we can expect the next season as well, Begins to deal not only with John’s revenge on Gilad’s establishment but also with the consequences of this revenge on her. The series, whose fifth season opened yesterday with two episodes that were released together, was just recently renewed for its sixth season, which will also be the last – so those who have survived it so far (not because it is not excellent, but because it really is not an easy series to watch) – come on, we Already on the way to the end.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on HOT HBO, and starting in the morning on HOT VOD and NEXT TV. Also, the series is available on Hulu, for those who have it, somehow
