Why electric motorcycles do not work in the Spanish market

These are the statements of José María Riaño, general secretary of Anesdor, after revealing that sales of electric motorcycles fell by 31.3% in the month of December. A downward trend which also continues in the accumulated of the year: 14,930 units were counted, -13% compared to 2022. In fact, it is the first year in which the electricity market decreases.

Motorcycles and light electric vehicles have registered large percentage growth in recent years. However, in 2023, despite there being more models on offer than ever, the electric market has contracted by 13%, contrasting with the double-digit growth of the general market. Penetration of the total market has dropped from 8.48% to 6.2%.

Speaking in terms of the accumulated annual figure, motorcycles registered a drop of – 14.3% with 13,197 units registered. Within these, motorcycles take the worst part with a decrease of -53.7% (730 units), while mopeds and scooters fall -9.7% (4,687 units) and -9.8% (7,780 units) respectively. The positive data comes from the microcar and tricycle markets, which have grown by +1.2% (1,367 units) and +18.8% (246 units) respectively.

By electric motorcycle sales channels (mopeds and motorcycles), it is the business channel that has recorded the best data in 2023, growing by 45.7% (7,078 units); The private channel fell -33.7% (5,303 units) and the rental channel fell -67.6% (816 units).
