February 13 of each year, since 2011, is World Radio Day. Despite the competition imposed by the Internet and social networks, this media remains popular and UNESCO promises it a “dynamic future”.

“Radio: A century of information, entertainment and education” is the theme of the celebration of the 2024 edition of World Radio Day. A theme which according to UNESCO “highlights radio’s remarkable past, relevant present and promise of a vibrant future”.

“Because despite the growing influence of the Internet and social networks, radio continues to be a first-class source of information and entertainment – the number of listeners is estimated at more than 4 billion people. Radio is also the medium that goes where others do not go: while almost a third of the population does not have access to decent Internet in 2023, proportions that rise to half of the populations in areas rural areas, radio is thus establishing itself as a more inclusive and accessible medium, particularly in crisis situations”

Audrey Azoulay, Director General of UNESCO, Message on the occasion of World Radio Day

Radio journalist and former director general of ORTB, Georges Amlon, from the height of his long experience does not say the opposite. The former journalist assures that “radio remains the most accessible media to the majority of the population”. And facing the Internet, the dean rather appreciates the opportunities of this technology for radio.
