First Look at Live-Action Zelda Movie Reveals Cast, Filming Details

A behind-the-scenes glimpse at the upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, currently filming in New Zealand, has ignited excitement among fans and confirmed key casting details. Initial skepticism surrounding the project – with some questioning its authenticity amidst advancements in AI-generated content – has subsided with the release of this footage.

Link, Zelda, and Impa Take Shape

The leaked footage showcases actors portraying iconic characters from the beloved video game franchise. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is visible as Link, sporting the character’s signature green tunic and long blonde hair. Bo Bragson embodies Zelda, clad in a blue tunic with a hairstyle reminiscent of her appearance in Twilight Princess.

However, the most surprising reveal centers around the casting of Impa. According to sources, Dichen Lachman – known for her roles in Severance, Jurassic Park films, and Agents of SHIELD – has been cast in the role. “This reveal is a pretty big deal,” one observer noted, “and we know the film is not going to be stocked with completely unknown actors all the way through.” Prior to this, only Bragson and Ainsworth had been officially announced as cast members.

A New Approach to Adaptation

Unlike Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Movie, which drew inspiration from across the entire game series, the Zelda film reportedly won’t be a direct adaptation of a single game. This approach allows filmmakers greater creative freedom while still honoring the franchise’s rich lore.

Nintendo’s Expanding Multimedia Universe

This project represents Nintendo’s continued expansion into multimedia entertainment, following the phenomenal success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed $1.3 billion worldwide. Promotion is already underway for its sequel, Super Mario Galaxy, slated for release in April 2026. Nintendo has signaled its intention to deliver a “consistent release” of films based on its most prominent franchises, with Zelda and Galaxy leading the charge.

Wes Ball at the Helm and a 2027 Release

The film is being directed by Wes Ball, best known for The Maze Runner series, and is a self-described “Zelda superfan.” With filming currently underway, a 2027 release date appears increasingly likely. The decision to pursue a live-action Zelda adaptation was considered a risk, particularly with the selection of relatively unknown lead actors. However, early glimpses suggest the casting choices are visually compelling.

Nintendo is reportedly deeply involved in all aspects of the film’s production, aiming to replicate at least a portion of the success achieved with the Mario movie. If successful, this could mark the beginning of a new era for Nintendo, solidifying its position as a major player in the film industry.
