Nine people have been killed after a bus carrying pilgrims overturned in southern Mexico. Another 40 people were seriously injured.

According to the Civil Defense Office in the southern state of Chiapas, the bus crashed in the city of Dila around 5.30am on Friday morning while passengers were attending a Corpus Christi party and were returning to Tabasco.

The victims were said to be pilgrims from Tabasco who were returning from a visit to a church in the municipality of Dila, Chiapas yesterday. As the road was wet due to rain, the bus lost control of its driver and crashed while trying to make a detour.

The condition of three of the 40 people injured in the accident is said to be critical and they are being treated at Dila Hospital. Prior to the arrival of emergency services, the local public and passing motorists provided first aid to bus passengers.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
