About nine thousand people, including artists, curators and museum directors, have signed an online petition calling for Israel to be excluded from this year’s Venice Art Biennale, accusing it of committing “genocide” in Gaza.

Reuters said that Israel is facing increasing international criticism, including in the world of arts, as a result of its military campaign on the Gaza Strip, which came after an attack carried out by Hamas on October 7.

“Any official representation of Israel on the international cultural scene is tantamount to an endorsement of its policies and the genocide in Gaza,” said the petition published online by the “Art Not Genocide Coalition” group.

The coalition noted that the Venice Biennale exhibition had previously banned South Africa due to its policy of apartheid, which was represented by white minority rule, in addition to excluding Russia for its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Among those who signed the request were the director of the Palestine Museum in the United States, Faisal Saleh, the American activist photographer Nan Goldin, and the British visual artist Jesse Darling, who won the Turner Prize last year.

The Venice Biennale, nicknamed the “Olympics of the Art World,” is one of the major events in the global arts calendar.

This year’s edition, titled “Foreigners Everywhere,” is scheduled to include pavilions from 90 countries between April 20 and November 24.
