A Belarusian van with 33 migrants was detained in the Czech Republic, the driver faces eight years in prison, this was reported by Dana Chirtkova, a police representative in the Vysočina region, where the migrants were found, writes novinky.cz.
According to the publication, instead of pallets with goods, the foreigner transported 33 people across the entire Czech Republic in the closed cargo compartment of a van, for which he ended up in custody on September 29.
The 33-year-old Belarusian forced several people, including a woman and three children, into the transport compartment of a VW Crafter. The car was stopped for inspection by members of the mobile detachment of the Office of the External Police Service on Tuesday, September 26, at about 15:30 at the 145th kilometer of the D1 highway in the direction of Prague.
“The police seized all the migrants and took them to the Foreign Police Department in Jihlava. Since these individuals did not have any documents authorizing their stay in the Czech Republic, after carrying out the necessary identification operations, they received exit orders ordering them to leave the Czech territory within seven days,” a police spokeswoman said.
The only one who was not released was the driver. Law enforcement officers detained him and his van. For criminal proceedings, the man was taken to a police cell as a suspect, where he was charged with organizing and facilitating the illegal crossing of the state border in the presence of an interpreter.
“Given the number of people transported, who were in the cargo hold in literally inhumane conditions, this act is assessed more severely, and the smuggler faces a prison sentence of up to eight years,” a police spokesman said.
After this, the accused was sent into custody by the district court of Ždar nad Sazavou.
