Die Saison am Mount Everest is over. 478 climbing permits were issued to foreigners. According to estimates by American blogger Alan Arnette, around 600 foreign mountaineers and local mountain guides reached the summit of the world’s highest mountain this spring from the Nepalese side. Although it could have been significantly more if a virus had not caused a large number of Everest aspirants to leave early. In addition, 16 Chinese are said to have climbed to the summit on the Tibetan side; foreign expeditions were not allowed there this year either.

Kami Rita Sherpa has made it to the summit twice this season, climbing Mount Everest 28 times. And a deaf couple from the USA also made it to Mount Everest: Scott Lehmann and Shayna Unger stood on Mount Everest on May 22nd and the next day on the summit of the 8515 meter high Lhotse, the neighboring mountain of Mount Everest. They were the first deaf people to do that. Because the government of Nepal declared in 2017 that it wanted to prevent people with disabilities from climbing Mount Everest, the dream initially seemed a long way off. However, Nepal’s Supreme Court lifted the ban a year later, clearing the way for the two.

Rekordsaison am Mount Everest

2023 was not only a record season on Mount Everest in this respect. Almost every day there was new news about dead, missing, frostbite and rescues. With 13 dead and four missing climbers, this season stands out. Among the missing climbers is Muhammad Hawari Hashim, a deaf Malaysian who disappeared while descending from the summit. Szilard Suhajda, a Hungarian climber who was not using bottled oxygen, was last seen climbing Hillary Step at 8790 meters.

Melissa Arnot, an American climber who has summited Everest six times, wrote on Instagram that she was frustrated to see big-name guides, expedition operators, influencers and clients sharing their accomplishments on social media after one of the deadliest Everest seasons on record shared without noticing the downsides. Particularly impressive are the pictures of the rescue of an exhausted Malaysian mountaineer, who Sherpas brought from the death zone at an altitude of 8,300 meters, sometimes on his back, to Camp III at an altitude of 7,000 meters, where he was then picked up by a helicopter.
