Tatler Asia, the company that organized the match between the Hong Kong players and Inter Miami, announced that it will withdraw a request for government compensation worth 2.04 million US dollars, after the absence of Argentine star Lionel Messi from the match. The company’s managing director and president, Michel Lamoniere, did not announce anything regarding refunding the value of tickets to the public.
According to the plan, the match was expected to represent a great show, but it caused general discontent, because Messi and Uruguayan Luis Suarez did not participate in the match. The American team’s coach, Argentine Gerardo “Tata” Martino, apologized to the local media after the match, and asked the fans for understanding. Martino said that the participation of both Messi and Suarez would have posed a danger to them, explaining: “Leo suffers from inflammation of the adductor muscle, while Suarez suffers from a knee problem.” Inter Miami president David Beckham was also subjected to boos from the audience after the end of the match, when he tried to thank the approximately 40,000 people who filled the stadium for their support and attendance.
