In Moscow, at the pedestrian crossing on Berezhkovskaya Embankment, a traffic light with a biometric facial recognition camera was tested. This was reported by the head of the Moscow State Traffic Inspectorate, Alexander Bykov, in an article for magazine “Road Safety”.

“Photo recording involves displaying the track of a pedestrian’s movement and a traffic light signal. If a pedestrian violates Russian traffic rules, his image (without identification) is transmitted to an electronic information display board located near the location of the violation,” the material says.

Alexander Bykov noted that for the system of bringing pedestrians to justice to work effectively, law enforcement officers must obtain biometric data of all citizens. However, for this to happen, he said, providing biometrics must become an obligation, not a right.

Based on neural network algorithms, as Mr. Bykov added, it will be possible to reduce accidents on the roads due to the fault of electric scooter owners. To obtain biometric data, he proposed changing the Code of Administrative Offenses and the legislation on personal data.
